Review from a Transgressive Fiction Fan

As of the time of writing this review, it has been over two weeks since I finished reading The Setting Sun, and I am still practically speechless. It was absolutely stunning. I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind. There were so many conflicting emotions in the prose; sorrow, joy, desperation, hope, peace, love, hatred, fear… It was chilling.

Kazuko held an unforgettable sort of tragic beauty, and Naoji had an almost autobiographical feel surrounding him that allowed the reader to feel like they were peering into Dazai’s mind. Both, along with the rest of the cast of characters, leapt off the page in a way that will haunt me for quite a long time.

This book is one of the best I’ve read.

“Insightful” Review from a Mainstream Reader

So bleak.
